Yay! It’s February! We made it through the longest winter month and Spring is right around the corner. Not feeling it yet? Well maybe this will help. How about some delicious, hot bone broth soup.
I bet your mother gave you chicken soup when you were under the weather. Her mother did the same. Why? Because it has so many healing qualities, and it basically just makes you feel better.
The science behind this has to do with amino acids and healthy proteins from the clean bones at the base of this broth. One of those is glycine and this powerful little amino helps regulate blood sugar, enhance muscle and hair growth and repair, support the central nervous system, promote alertness, improve memory, boost mood and reduce stress. One more thing – reduced cellulite as connective tissues are repaired. WOW! And that’s just the beginning. Add to this the healing qualities of gelatin and all of the minerals in the bones as well as the Phytonutrients added from the vegetables we throw into the mix. You will find that bone broth soup will also help heal intestinal issues like leaky gut, IBS, and even things like seasonal allergies.
Are you ready to try it? Great! It really is easy. The key is starting with clean, pasture-raised meat or wild-caught Atlantic fish. Save the bones and throw them in a pot covered with clean, filtered water.
Add some veggies. We like to throw in lots of garlic (unpeeled is fine), onions with the peels, and organic celery and carrots. Season with a teaspoon of sea salt and ½ teaspoon pepper. Cayenne is great if you want more spice.
Bring this to a hard boil for about 5 minutes and scoop off any foam that comes to the surface. Then cover and reduce to a low simmer. Now here is the key. Allow this to simmer for about 12 hours or even longer. I know people who keep a pot of broth simmering on the back of the stove all the time. What you want to accomplish is bringing all of the fabulous nutrients out of the bones and veggies and into the broth.
Then strain the broth and discard the rest. Drink a nice cup of warm broth when you are feeling chilled or fatigued. Use it as a base for soups by adding meat/fish and veggies. Mushrooms are a great addition for their many healing qualities as well. Fresh herbs like parsley, thyme, cilantro, oregano all help heal your beautiful body.
