Darn mosquitoes! I've seen some pretty horrific bites from these wicked bugs this summer. The victims were using products with deet and still got bit. Yikes! So not only do those products not keep you safe, they load you up with toxins as a side benefit. Yuck!
Enter a better way. I use a spray of a few essential oils in a small glass bottle filled with water. Shake it well and spray away. The mosquitoes don't even come near me. People do though - even babies - because it smells great and is completely safe.
Oils to try include: Cedarwood, Peppermint, Rosemary, Eucalyptus, and Clary Sage. Fennel was shown in an Italian study to kill up to 50% of mosquito larvae.

Enjoy your summer.
Summer fun can leave your body hurting. Running, swimming, gardening, hiking... all the beautiful things we cram into the few short months of summer here in Wisconsin can take a toll. I have learned there is a way to first - prepare bodies to perform with more ease, and second - ease the pain if we overdo it.
I have fallen in love with essential oils. There is a soothing blend of oils that, when used on the major muscle groups before a workout, can make a big difference in stamina and recovery. This blend of oils includes Wintergreen which is 99% methyl salicylate giving it cortison-like properites, Camphor Bark which helps with pain and inflammation, Peppermint and Blue Tansy that are both cooling and anti-inflammatory, Blue Chamomile is documented as an aid for arthritis, Helichrysm improves circulation and reduces inflammation and the Chinese have used Osmanthus for ages to reduce phlegm and improve blood flow. Sounds like a lot I know, but it takes so little of each precious oil to make a huge difference.
Put 10-20 drops of this soothing blend in a 2 oz. glass spray bottle filled with Witch Hazel. Shake well and spray on the big muscles that are going to get a workout. Remember to get your back as well. It feels fantastic and I've found it helps during the exercise and especially after if I have overextended.
You can also add the oil blend to a base oil like coconut or almond oil and use it as a soothing rub.

Enjoy your summer.
